Organization Goals for 2010

Let’s talk about getting organized in 2010. If you’re like most people your New Year’s resolutions have come and gone by now. Fortunately it’s never too late to get started over again.

Some considerations for organizational goals are:

  • Start small and build a foundation from there
  • Pick something important to you
  • Make the goal specific and measurable so you know when to stop
Most people are disorganized in one or a combination of three areas:
  • Time Management - just give me a minute!
  • Space Management - where did I put my keys?
  • Information Management - can I declare email bankruptcy and delete them all?
Time management goals usually revolve around being too busy. It’s important to remember that being busy is not the same as doing the important things to meet your goals. Most time management goals are to spend more time with family and friends or for oneself and to get healthy. Make it a standing appointment on your calendar and keep it if you want to be successful in this area.

Space management goals are important because it takes a lot of time and energy to look for lost items. Starting small is key here because it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Target removing clutter at least by 50 percent to really see a difference in your day to day life. The saying “a place for everything and everything in its place” really does apply here.

Information management is crucial because information flows to us every day and if it isn’t handled you will have a flood on your desk and in your inbox. Remember that piles of paper are just decisions that haven’t been made yet. Target organizational goals in this area to better handle daily skimming of the information pool.

Some final thoughts are:
  • You can only really tackle 1-2 goals a quarter, so don’t get caught in the all or nothing mindset.
  • Consider instead of just goals once a year to pick a goal a month.
  • The Secret to Success is Getting Started, so start Right Now!

  • A piece of paper weighs nothing, but it multiplies. Try moving a filing cabinet full of paper & you can hurt yourself. Don’t let it pile up. #
